Fashion For Men Issue #1...

Milan Vukmirovic's new magazine was just released, and I didn't realize that it was going to be like a hard covered book. Looks pretty impressive for a bi-annual magazine right? I'll need to find a place to pick up a copy (like under the Christmas tree, or the Walker Art Museum's book store). A friend of mine works as a writer for it, so it would be interesting to read just to see his contribution to it. 

Christmas List...

So I guess it is that time of year when everyone wants to know what is on your Christmas list. Not that I really expect to get any of these things, but who knows, maybe Santa thought I was extra good this year? 

Prada Espadrilles - I was dying over this shoe when it came out for spring, and it was such a good seller that Prada is making it for yet another season, which means I can't pass it up for another round. I don't like it as much as the original with the little bit of woven sole, but I do think this pared down version would fit better into my current wardrobe. Plus who doesn't want to add a few extra inches to their height? 

Rick Owens Ribbed Tee - I Have a few already from other designers, and they are my absolute favorite pieces in my closet. Perfect for throwing on without a second thought (I'm all about a simplified wardrobe, gone are the days when I spent hours thinking about what to wear) and light enough that you can layer on it without added bulk. I really like the elongated proportions of this one, which is something my current ribbed tee's do not have. 

Alexander McQueen Scarf - I'm surprised that I don't have a McQueen scarf yet, but I'm sure it is about time we change that. I used to borrow them from a friend in Paris that had quite a few, and was really surprised by how warm they are, not to mention their large size is perfect for wrapping around your neck. I like this one in particular for the amazingly detailed pattern. 

Balenciaga Day in Anthracite - Perfect in every way. 

iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro - Basically I need an iPhone because my phone is horrible and working less and less every day. I can use it abroad and talk to people abroad with the apps, and basically do everything I need to do on my phone. Pretty much need one. An iPad would be nice to have something to act as an extension to my macbook. Easy to carry around, take notes in class, do fashion sketches on, basically makes life easier and wont throw out my back like carrying my macbook around with me everywhere. Finally a 15in MacBook Pro would be nice. It's been almost 5 years now since I got my MacBook, and it is time for a much needed upgrade. 

Rick Owens... The Book...

What supposedly is an incredibly large and heavy (10.6 lbs) book written by and about one of my favorite designers, Rick Owens, has just been published. Needless to say, I'm categorizing this under "NEEDS! CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT! HIGHEST PRIORITY ON MY LIST OF NECESSITIES!" For anyone looking for that perfect mid-october or Halloween gift for me, I'll be kind enough to provide the amazon link to it here. Thank you in advance.

It was once said that Haider Ackermann makes women cry. I'd like to expand that to Haider Ackermann makes everyone cry. I would be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear at his S/S 2011 show, or got choked up at his F/W 2011 outing. To see Haider's work on the runway is a spectacular moment; the pace, the styling, the music, the clothes, everything works together in perfect harmony. Haider has said he puts all his heart and soul into each collection, that the show is all his emotion put out there. It is an interesting philosophy to design, to make clothes with such emotion, but for him it works so perfectly and you can feel the raw emotive quality each garment has. And while his shows in person are one thing, the way they photograph is something completely different. You can stop and look, examine the obsessive ways he makes leather and silk twist and turn into shapes so new, so original, that it you really can't argue that what he makes is art. And while the wearability of his designs is debatable, there is no question that what he creates is some of the most consistently aesthetically pleasing work being made in fashion today. I introduced a close friend of mine to his clothes after the last F/W show. She is an enigma to me, the only person in the industry I know that truly knows nothing of what else is going on in fashion. While browsing through the images on Style.com, she was literally moved to tears. She turned to look at me and said "I need to find a new profession, because there is no way I could ever make anything as gorgeous as this man". It really says something about a designer when his clothes, not only in person, but through pictures, can bring about such an emotional reaction. I wanted to share a few of my favorite detail shots from his S/S 2012 show. His typical black color palette was injected with chartreuse, cobalt, teal, and crimson, as well as even richer fabrics (his typical choice of leather and silk was upgraded through moments of jacquards and crocodile). It takes a lot to move me away from my neutral colors, but this was the most compelling proposition for color I have seen in a long long while. So I hope everyone enjoys, and maybe it will move you enough to explore his work further on your own. 

A calfskin vest twisting and turning into the most unusual and visually arresting shapes, folds open to reveal a hint of the crocodile facing. 

A snapshot of what makes his runways so special; the group of three models out at the same time, walking at a snails pace down the runway, hands in their pockets, clothes causally disheveled. It is so perfectly blasé.

What looks like a normal tailored jacket from the front, is anything but from the back. I have to stop and admire the way the chiffon connects at the shoulder then beautifully drapes and knots in the back. It almost begs the question "who thinks of that?!". 

The color and the print. Two things I would never use, but am certainly considering it now. Again it is the small details that make this so special; the pagoda shoulder toned down to the most perfect proportion to keep it modern, the shawl lapel with the most delicate roll line, and as if to make the material and garment seem not as precious, the sleeves scrunched and upturned to show off the lining. 

My favorite look for a few reasons - The monochromatic look comprised of subtly different shades. The fact that every piece is a different material, each with a unique texture (the sheen of the silk taffeta pants contrasts so perfectly with the suede vest). And the contrast between traditional and avant garde seen through the necklines; the classic revers on the lounge jacket compliments so perfectly the angular draped neckline of the suede vest.

Alexander McQueen

This collection was spectacular from start to finish; light, feminine, and couture like craftsmanship.  After a few seasons now at the helm, you can really see how in tune to Alexander McQueen's vision Sarah Burton is. 

Ann Demeulemeester

My current fashion mood to a T, dark romantic bohemian, is just what Ann D. does best. The shapes and transparency were fresh and interesting, plus I just loved the styling through hair and makeup.  

Celine

Not one of my favorite collections this season, but this look was a knockout and stayed in my mind. A crisp white shirt and a superbly cut pair of trousers should be a uniform for anyone and everyone. 

Damir Doma

Relaxed and easy, this was one collection I wanted to steal and pile on myself. This metal embellished vest is a must have piece for my own closet. Luckily Damir does unisex rather well. 

Gareth Pugh

I've been having a bit of Gareth withdrawal in recent seasons where he went sans runway show and opting for video presentations with less than crazy styling. Of course, he is back to his theatrical self. These final few looks took my breath away with their almost liquid look from laying shiny and transparent fabric. Plus whats not to love about those Philip Treacy hats? 

Givenchy

Sporty, chic, and exotic skins for days. I'm sure I'll be trying to hunt down some stingray, eel, and shark leathers for my own projects. Plus can we just admire this shark skin blazer? 

Haider Ackermann

Best collection of the season in my opinion. Haider really has hit a stride, and this collection was just another stunner to add to his list. The way he thinks about shape and color makes him such an inspiration to my own work, and the things he can do with silk and leather is enough to bring a tear to my eye, and the eyes of many other industry people. 

Jil Sander

Crisp white shirts, haute couture shapes, and a little Picasso = another knock out collection by Raf Simons. Now that he says he is done with the couture theme from the last three seasons, I'll be eagerly awaiting to see what he has up his sleeve for Jil Sander. 

Maison Martin Margiela

This look is just one of the reasons why I love Margiela; One perfectly cut blazer vest, with a twist... a built in garment protector, the little ones that they have on all their hangers in the boutiques. 

Marni

Shape, color, texture. I've been having my Marni moment as of late, and after this show I'm wanting to explore more of what Consuelo Castiglioni has been doing at the quirky Italian House. 

Thierry Mugler

While the wearablity of the collection is basically limited to only the modelesque, I can give big props to Mugler for one thing; they have some of the most complex pattern cutting around. The construction and shapes are visually interesting, and provide some great inspiration for what you can do when drafting a pattern. 

Reed Krakoff

Reed really reminds me of a modern day Helmut Lang, his utilitarian clothes usually end up being the highlight of New York Fashion Week for me. As you can probably guess by now, I love metallic and transparent fabric layered, and when you do the metallic in my favorite type, that hematite/gunmetal, well, it makes one winning look in my opinion. 

Rick Owens

The accents of rust in Ricks latest collection were what took this otherwise average collection from him to another level. Rick is so consistent season to season, that without this little pop of color, I think it would have just blended in with so many of his other recent collections. 

The Row

It was chic, it was ethnic, it was minimal, and to top it off, the couture level embroidery and beadwork just brought the Olsen twins label to another level. 

DJ Mag Poll 2011...

So DJ Mag just did their annual voting for the top 100 dj's. I'm sure as usual, the big trance names (Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, and Tiësto) will get the top spots, but of course I had to put in my vote for which dj's I think did the best job this year. 

1) Nicolas Jaar - Hands down the best live performances I have ever seen in my life. A full live band, a small room packed full of people, and a crazy 4 hours of dancing yourself silly make up a typical night with Nico. This year he released some re-edits and mixes of classic hip-hop songs have all quickly jumped to the most played songs on my iPod. I heard his re-edit of Missy Elliot's "Work It" when he played at the Rex and went crazy, one of my all time favorite songs made even better. 

2) Magda - I remember when I first got to Europe, I asked a group of people if it was alright that I put some music on, specifically one of Magda's dj sets. The response "EVERYBODY LOVES MAGDA!" was yelled by a girl in the room. Who I thought was a little known dj from Berlin was really a superstar on the European club scene. I certainly wouldn't have figured this out back in Minnesota. It didn't take me long afterwords to figure out that Europeans really do love Magda, and for good reason; her funky break beat style has the amazing ability to get everyone in the room on their feet and dancing. 

3) Habstrakt - On my quest to find the impossible, dubstep in Paris, I came across a person at the forefront of French Dub. In contrast to American and British dubstep that dominates the scene, French dubstep is stripped down to the very essentials. It's deep, dark, bass filled, and filthy dirty in the best possible way. Habstrakt easily made my top three this year, he exposed me to a whole new subgenera of dubstep, which frankly I like a whole lot more than anything else being put out by the dubstep scene right now. 

4) Bob Sinclar - Sign of a night to remember on the Paris party circuit? Bob Sinclar was probably on the turntables. Frequently showing up at a party and taking over the music became not only common, but expected from Sinclar. Many a nights were danced away behind the dj booth of this man. Something also has to be said for a man who's face is plastered up all over Paris. He was in the media so much that even my sister would comment "I saw that guy, Bob Sinclar on...", the fact that my country loving sister was able to recognize a dj has to mean that dj is something special. 

On a side note, that party in Milan that is in this music video, well I'm pretty sure that was in Paris since I know 80% of the people in it. When Marc and Emmanuel (the two men in the red horned masks) host a party, you go. Bob knows that too, even if he shows up a bit late sometimes!   

5) Deadmau5 - His new album "4x4 = 12" was everything I expected from this soon to be legendary dj. The fact alone that he can sell out a show in Minneapolis goes to show how popular he really is. "Raise Your Weapon" was the one song that stood out, and quite possibly the whole reason that I have him on this list. The smooth, almost trance like sound of classic Deadmau5 is beautifully combined with his new, almost dubstep sound (although dubstep fans are quick to point out that Deadmau5's version of dubstep is anything but). 

Lanvin F/W 2011...

So this has been out for a week now making it's rounds around the internet, but I'm still not sick of it yet. Honestly what's not to love about badly dancing models in beautiful clothes and... a surprise cameo from Alber Elbaz! Fashion that doesn't take itself too seriously; very refreshing. 

Le Tour de France...

After three hours of waiting, watching the never ending parade of sponsors drive by blasting techno music (I've come to lear that no event in Paris is complete without techno music playing at some point) Finally! It's a bird! It's a plane! NO! IT'S A HELICOPTER! THE CYCLISTS ARE ALMOST HERE! (note that in a week of cold and rainy, the day the tour comes it is sunny and warm. The sporting gods where looking out for Paris today). 

I found a prime viewing spot along Rue de Rivoli and the Tulleries gardens. No need to be elevated though, I was right along the guard rail. 

And as soon as you see them, they disappear again. Luckily I was along the final circuit, so they came by another 5 times. I was amazed at how fast they could travel all the way up Avenue des Champs-Élyesée and back to where I was...

... Just beyond the 1km marker. Lovely view of the corner next to the Louvre, and on the other end Place de la Concorde. They would come back on the other side of Tulleries, but you could tell when they were close from all the police motorcycles and helicopters. If you squint hard enough, or enlarge the picture, you can see them as they make the final lap. Overall it was an amazing day, and I was so glad I was finally able to watch it in person.

Pont de l'Alma...

Pont de l'Alma is one of those places in Paris I pass by all the time on my way to other places, but rarely ever stop at. For some reason I have always had a very vivid memory of when Princess Diana died of this tunnel and the column divider wall down the middle. I have no idea why this is. A lot of friends live on this side of town so when we go out and take taxis they almost always have to go through this tunnel, and every time I think about what happened here as our taxi speeds along this narrow road. Also, random fact I learned when I stopped today to take this picture, but the liberty flame is the same scale as the one on the Statue of Liberty. It doesn't seem very big in person, and although I have never been to the Statue of Liberty, I always imagined that the flame would be bigger than this one. 

Waiting While The World Goes By...

So I've come to the conclusion that I don't take nearly enough pictures documenting my everyday life. Of course, now comes the time that I talk about how I want that to change, and that I will post a picture each day of something I did, and how it gives me the fun task of coming up with original names for pictures... then we wait and see how long I can do it before I get bored and go back to not blogging about anything... or how long I can go lugging around my big ol' camera before my back gives out... whichever comes first... 

Anywho, waiting for the bus to come and take me home at Porte de Saint-Cloud out in the boonies (or the 16th, I prefer boonies) where I was visiting a friend (lucky for them I'm a good friend for traveling all the way out there!). I've come to the conclusion that the metro is just to crowded for my taste, so I've started taking the bus everywhere I go. It's also a much more scenic way to travel around Paris, and you get to know your way around the city really well.

Rue de la Ferronnerie...

I'm pretty used to having my picture taken by street style bloggers, but normally it is something that happens only around the fashion weeks, while I'm in fashionable parts of town, doing fashionable things. Not today though. Literally walked out of my apartment building on my way to work, when up came the photographers to the french style blog WallDress. I'm quite flattered considering I threw on my trench for the impending rain, and clearly didn't have time to steam my shirt, but thanks for thinking I was looking stylish (or gothic with a lot of structure as they said [I take that as a big compliment]).

Kathy Fassihi's models lined up, by far my favorite of all the seniors collections. 

After the show at the Cirque d'Hiver. Apparently this whole building was full for the show. I only remember seeing the first two rows of people.
